Ethnic background of Pakistani Cricketers. By Ata Us Salam

During this world cup I badly felt that Cricket was the most favorite game of most of the Pakistanis but I think the better sentence would be that cricket is the single favorite game of Pakistanis, especially in recent era when terrorism has distinct all pleasure activities in Pakistan. Cricket is the only source of enjoyment for this terrorism affected country. One can see a large number of boys playing cricket in every nook and corner of this country. When these boys reach in national team, majority of them show very immature behavior. Their immature attitude not only creates problems for themselves but also it is becoming an insulting factor for whole of this nation. Its most recent example is the spot fixing punishments which was awarded to Salman Butt, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Aamir. Before these charges our players have been continuously facing different punishments from International Cricket authorities. Sometimes these punishments are imposed due to use of drugs while sometimes these are due to match fixing but despite regular punishments Pakistani cricketers remain regularly involved in one after another scandal. Here as under, I want to discuss the ethnic back ground of some of our cricketers who played Pakistan’s team Cricket team during last two decades. Captains of Pakistani cricket team have been changed after a short duration. These captains are from different areas of Pakistan. Ethnically they are from the Punjabi, Sindhi and Pashtoon areas. According to my memory none of the Baloch player has never led Pakistan’s national team, even we don’t see presence of single Baloch player in Pakistan’s national team. During the 1992’s world cup Imran Khan was leading Pakistan’s Cricket team, although he was born in the province of Punjab but ethnically he was Pashtoon. While Shahid Khan Afridi and Moin Khan are also Pashtoon but residing in Karachi. Only Younas Khan is residing in the Pashto speaking areas. After Imran Khan, many Punjabi players also led this team. They are Saleem Malik, Wasim Akrm, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Waqar Younas, Muhammad Yousaf, Aamir Suhail, Shoaib Malik and Salman Butt. While list of Urdu speaking captains during this period was composed of Javed Miandad, Saeed Anwar and Rashid Latif. There can be a little error in the above mentioned list but I think it is the complete list of those players who captained Pakistan’s national cricket team during my memory. If we discuss their character, we would find that none of the Punjabi captain resigned himself but all of them forced to leave captaincy while all Pashtoon captains left their captaincy themselves with dignity. On the other side almost all Pujabi captains faced the charges of betting while not even a single Pashto or Urdu speaking captain faced such kind of shameful blames. Mushtaq Ahmad, Aaqib Javed, Ijaz Ahmad, Shoaib Akhtar, Rana Naveed-Ul- Hassan, Muhammad Asif, Muhammad Amir, Kamran Akmal are those prominent players who never led our national team but got publicity due to their notorious activities. These above mentioned players remain involved in various scandals of match fixing and spot fixing. Some of them have already faced different punishments and some are still facing different penalties from International Cricket Council (ICC) and unfortunately all of these belong to the province of Punjab as well. I request authorities of Pakistan Cricket Board to remain careful before accepting any player from the province of Punjab, but would it be possible in the presence of a Punjabi Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board?
