Woman to Be Stoned to Death

Lagos. October 19, 2001 By Ahmed Oyerinde Sokoto The Upper Sharia Court I Gwadebawa in Sokoto State has sentenced one Safiya Hussaini to death by stoning for fornication. Delivering judgment on the case, the presiding judge, Muhammed Bello Sa

Muhammed ruled that the convict would be stoned to death when she weans her baby, adding that she would not be under prison custody but must produce herself to the court for the judgment to be executed on her. He said if the convict refused to appear before the court after the period of grace given to her, the police with the assistance of the general public should force her to the court. The judge however gave her the right of appeal within 30 days from the day of the judgment at the Sharia Sourt of Appeal Sokoto. In another development, Area Courts in Sokoto are to be converted to Sharia Courts for uniform adjuration of Islamic legal system in the state. This was the decision of the state Sharia Implementation Committee presented to Governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa recently. The committee chairman, while defending its stand before the Governor, said allowing area courts to function alongside sharia courts would bring about flaws in the dispensation of justice in the state. Responding, Governor Bafarawa expressed delight that it was the same committee which had earlier spared some area courts that wanted them to be converted to sharia courts now.
