Karachi: March 17, 2011. (PCP) Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress strongly condemned mysterious death of Qamar David in Karachi jail who was receiving death threats from Muslim inmates and prison guards. Qamar David was arrested under blasphemy charges in 2006, and sentence to life in prison from District and Session Courts Karachi. He complained of threats by Muslim inmates and prison guards to his lawyer and family members during their visits saying “ They threat me and say, I am blasphemer and they will soon finish me as life is prison is not enough sentence for me but Death” The Lawyer of Qamar David filed a miscellaneous report in relevant court praying for security measures of his client but no action was ordered on it. The Karachi prison authorities informed family members of Qamar David that his dead body is lying in Civil Hospital Karachi where he was brought for medical aid after he felt ill in jail. The civil society activists found marks of torture on his body when they received his dead body from Civil Hospital Karachi and informed Medico Legal office of the hospital but Qamar David’s death certificate was issued before it in which cause of death was claimed heart failure. Nazir Bhatti said “The death certificate of Qamar David is another medical certificate as issued in Teenage Christian House Maid Shazia death in Lahore when twenty seven torture marks were declared as skin disease” In month of January 2011, Salman Taseer, Governor of Punjab was gunned down by his body guard in Islamabad on pleading case of Christian woman Asia Bibi who was sentenced to death on charges of blasphemy and in month of March 2011, Shahbaz Bhatti, Federal Minister for Minorities was also assassinated in capital city of Pakistan on demanding revision in blasphemy laws. “After martyrdom of Salman Taseer and Shahbaz Bhatti, it was duty of government to provide adequate security to victims of blasphemy in jails but it was ignored for Qamar David” added Nazir Bhatti Nazir Bhatti said that we have fears about safety of Asia Bibi who is waiting for his appeal against death sentence in jail and we demand her tight security and for every victim of blasphemy inside prisons of on bail. Nazir Bhatti demanded Judicial enquiry in killing of Qamar David that culprits involved may be brought to justice.
