HYDERABAD: March 16, 2011: (By Abbas Kassar) Sindh police has exposed its brutal face and has swooped on hapless prisoners in central jail Hyderabad killing 7 of them and injuring 40 more while sending hundreds in solitary confinement for the only reason that the jail administration had suspended water and electricity of 1700 plus prisoners of jail and that the inmates were on protest against the atrocities and had
refused to go into barracks. The political workers of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party had intervened and on their assurance inmates had agreed to go into barracks but on a sudden the cruel jail superintendent
Bashir Sarhandi ordered operation against helpless and unarmed prisoners and with help of 1000 plus policemen from district police lines started firing on the prisoners killing 7 inmates and injuring hundreds others. He was extended active help in crushing the prisoners by district police officers Pir Farid Sarhandi who happens to be belonging to same Sarhandi tribe of jail superintendent. Farid Sarhandi DPO of adjoining district Thatta was under warrants of arrest issued by a civil judge and judicial magistrate Hyderabad who has ordered Husri police to produce him before his court handcuffed on March 2,2011 in a criminal case. But being blue eyed man of Sindh home minister Zulfiqar Mirza he was transferred and posted as district police officer Hyderabad to frighten the judge who had issued warrants of arrest for him as well as to terrorize the complainant a woman of Husri town near Hyderabad. On request of jail superintendent Hyderabad DPO sent 1000 plus police force to suppress jail inmates. In a discriminate firing 7 including Aziz Khoso, Ghulam Ali Khaskheli, Ghulam Mustafa Khaskheli, Nadir Magsi, Hakim Mallah, Shafiq Rajput and Juman Shah were killed on the spot while40 more were injured. Police as usual concocted story that prisoners were carrying weapons and had injured many policemen. If that false story could be accepted then one could ask jail officials how the weapons reached the prisoners. In another incident police let its terror lose on college lecturers and professors of Sindh at Karachi same day who were protesting for their demands. On call of Sindh professors and lecturers association the college teachers tried to march from D.J. Science College to peoples secretariat when they were interrupted by police which started shelling and baton charges on them injured 10 professors and arrested 20 others. On same day in Karachi police and Rangers started shelling on protesting workers of Port Qasim for only reason that they had staged sit in for their demands. 20 workers were injured and more than 40 arrested. It may be mentioned here that since the last 3 years when the present PPP government has come into power whole country especially Sindh province has turned into police state and no day passes when innocent people are not made target of killing, brutalities, kidnappings and other crimes by police and criminals in collaboration with police. Scores of people are kidnapped and due to police failure their relatives get their release by paying ransom to kidnappers. Even on the day while writing this story scores were still in captivity of kidnappers. The federal as well as Sindh government were busy in appeasing their coalition partners who are bent on blackmailing the government on tiny issues. On 15 March 2011 while above brutalities of Sindh police were committed the president of Pakistan Mr. Asif Ali Zardari was on visit to Sindh and busy in
appeasing his government's one coalition partner and caring not for the people being killed and injured or arrested police who was on killing spree in his own home province. Though chief justice Sindh justice Musheer Alam has taken notice of killing of prisoners in central jail Hyderabad and asked detailed report from district judge Hyderabad one hopes that Sindh High Court will take action against jail superintendent and DPO Hyderabad.
