Khushpur, Punjab: March 7, 2011. (PCP) Former Minister for Population Welfare, Convener World Miniorities Alliance, Julius Salik visited the residence of slain Minister for Minority Affairs, Shahbaz Bhatti in Khush Pur Village, and offered condolences to the bereaved family. J. Salik condemned the murder of Shahbaz Bhatti, and termed it a highly unfortunate incident. The former Minister appreciated Shahbaz Bhatti’s brother, Peter Jacob, who is associated with a human rights organization in Canada, for his speech at Fatima Church at the time of funeral for his high moral and asked him to use his good office and influence to push for changing the current system of electing Minority members in Pakistan. J. Salik said that the present system discriminates against the minorities and prevents their effective participation in political life. He further said that world over the minority members of the society get to elect their representatives directly, whereas the current system in vogue in Pakistan allows political parties to choose their own minority representatives. Such representatives are more interested in keeping their political masters happy than to serve their community. J.Salik lamented over the behavior of the current political leadership on their silence regarding the issue of minority representation in the parliament. J.Salik vowed to struggle against the unconstitutional method of minority representation in the parliament.
