Reaction on Islamic parties protest on blasphemy law: Gangly Khan

Image

Mandi Bahauddin, Pakistan: January 3, 2011. (PCP) Recently blasphemy laws and amendment bill tabled by Sherri Rehman has emerged as a burning issue. Sherri Reman pleads that the tabled amendment bill is not against Islam; its main purpose is that blasphemy laws may not be misused by invested interests. Her arguments are appealing. But on the other hand leaders of religious groups are against any amendment in blasphemy laws. They are now protesting and threatening of serious consequences if any such amendment is made. It may be mentioned that blasphemy laws were made harsh by a military dictator to please the mullahs since at that time Mullahs community supported martial law regime. So far these blasphemy laws have not brought any positive results that might have promoted Islam or enhanced its dignity. In Bangladesh government has put ban on participating in elections for parties that use name of Islam for securing votes. Government is requested to take similar steps for banning political parties to participate in elections that demand votes in the name of Islam.
