London. May 12, 2004. CLAAS is demanding a judicial inquiry into murder of a 19-year-old Christian allegedly killed by Muslim extremists. Mr. Nasir Saeed Said "It has been reported that Christian student Javaid Anjum was abducted on 17 April and taken to an Islamic seminary where he was tortured and forced to deny his faith. Javaid was given electric shocks and his nails were pulled out" Its reported that doctors who examined Javaid anjum in Faisalabad said "he was covered in wounds, his kidneys had failed and his right arm and fingers were fractured" It is believed that extremists attacked Javaid after they saw him drinking water from a tap belonging to their seminary, something they believe Christians should not do. After being tortured, Javaid was handed over to the police and accused of theft. He died two weeks later. According to Javaid's family, who reported the incident to CLAAS, Javaid was visiting his grandfather in Toba Tek Singh. He was waiting at a bus stop when he felt thirsty and drank water from a tap belonging to the Islamic seminary Jamia Hussain-bin-Murtaza. Seminary students started quizzing Javaid. When they discovered he was a Christian, they abducted him and tried to force him to renounce Christ and recite the kalam (Islamic faith statement). On refusing, Javaid was tortured for five days, then taken to the police and accused of theft when his condition became critical. Nasir Saeed, of CLAAS-UK, said: 'This is an example of the increasing number of hate-crimes being committed against Christians in Pakistan. It is not an isolated incident. In recent months, many other Christians have been tortured because of their faith and forced to convert to Islam.' CLAAS is appealing to human rights organisations and the media to examine the plight of Christians in Pakistan who are being persecuted because of their faith. Nasir said: 'We want justice for people who are being victimised because of their faith. The sad fact is that the perpetrators of such heinous crimes in Pakistan are never punished. Mr. Nasir Saeed urged UK based Christians to write their MP/MEP to intervene in matter to hold judicial enquiry in murder.
