20-year Old CCSF Nursing Student Scheduled for Deportation Monday

USA: November 12, 2010. (PCP) Lawyer Sin Yen Ling has learned from credible source that ICE plans to deport Steve Li, a 20 year old nursing student on Monday November 15, 2010. In response, supporters will stage a news conference and rally to urge Senator Boxer to sponsor a "private bill", a last ditch effort to halt Steve's deportation. When: Noon, Friday, November 12th 2010 Where: Senator Boxer's Office, 1700 Montgomery St, San Francisco 941111 Who: Steve's teacher and mentor Sang Chi, Steve's friend Marilyn Luu, and Sin Yen Ling, Steve's legal counsel and many others. Background: After weeks of statewide mobilization efforts to stop the deportation of Shing Ma "Steve" Li, his legal counsel, Sin Yen Ling has learned from a credible source that ICE plans to deport Li on Monday November 15, 2010."Despite the possibility of a DREAM Act vote in the lame-duck session, ICE is once again acting as a rogue institution and plans to deport a young bright student," says Ling. "Steve was the type of student teachers love having in their classroom, he aspired to be a nurse and serve low income communities in San Francisco," says Sang Chi, Steve's teacher and mentor. Before Li's arrest, he was preparing to transfer to San Francisco State University and finish his nursing degree in order to pursue his dreams in health education. "Steve is just as American as I am, we listen to the same music, eat the same food, speak the same language," says Marilyn Luu, Steve's friend. "It's senseless to deport him back to Peru where he will be homeless upon arrival", continues Luu. On September 15, Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) raided Shing Ma "Steve" Li's San Francisco home and arrested him. Steve is ethnically Chinese but was born in Peru as his parents fled political persecution from China. Five years ago, Steve's family was denied political asylum from China and issued a removal order. However, Steve was not aware of his immigration situation until his home was raided. Advocates and community members see Steve's case as a prime example of how the nation's dysfunctional immigration system tears up families and targets contributing members of society. His arrest was just a week before Congress failed to vote on the DREAM Act, a widely supported common sense bill that would provide a pathway to legalization to undocumented students who've grown up in the US and attend two years of college or serve two years of the military in which Steve and thousands of other Bay Area students would directly benefit from.
