Faisalabad: November 3, 2010. (PCP) On 31st October 2010, Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM) in collaboration with Peace and Human Development (PHD) and Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) organized a seminar titled “Access of People to the Benefits of Democracy in Pakistan”, which was joined by 110 Muslim and Christian participants. Naseem Anthony (Executive Secretary-AWAM), Suneel Malik (Executive Secretary-Peace and Human Development-PHD), Nazia Sardar, Zafar Iqbal, Amna Bano and Amara Naseem were among the speakers of the seminar, held at Chak 75 Sohal in Faisalabad.
Naseem Anthony said, “Rule of law, defense of human rights and access of public to the benefits of democracy is impossible without the abolition of corruption, because corruption is an evil which has not only distorted the institutions but has also created bad image of Pakistan in the world.” “It is pity that law enforcing agencies and institutions for providing justice are termed as the most corrupt institutions of Pakistan according to the recent report of transparency international,” he added.
Suneel Malik said, “Since democratic assemblies have been dissolved on the corruption charges in the political history of Pakistan, therefore sitting government must improve its credibility by withdrawing its support for corrupt people and by taking strict action against corrupt elements for avoiding military takeover and for prolongation of democratic political setup.”
Nazia Sardar said, “Continuation of democracy in Pakistan is imperative for the development and prosperity of the country and nation, therefore few elements such as; voters should be politically aware in order to keep an eye on the performance of elected representatives, political parties should initiate internal election within their parties and should make the accountability process transparent, are essential for democratic culture in Pakistan.
Zafar Iqbal said, “Lawlessness, target killings, terrorism, poverty and inflation is on the rife in Pakistan, therefore solving the problems of general public should be the top priority of the government in order to ensure benefits of democracy accessible at grassroots, and judiciary must give priority to cases of poor people over influential people in order to ensure easy access to justice for majority of people in Pakistan.”
The speakers for the enforcement of stable democracy in Pakistan demanded that: government must improve its performance and credibility by taking stern action against all corrupt people including parliamentarians and bureaucrats, and must deposit the recovered money from the possession of corrupt elements in the national reserves; government must take effective measures for providing relief to the people against dengue fever; government must promote culture of merit system by appointing eligible candidates rather than ineligible candidates following the lawful means on all posts in the state institutions; government must take legal action against the parliamentarians resorting to fake graduation degree for ensuring their access to the legislative assembly; government must avoid raising inflation and must impose income tax on landlords and industrialists in order to mitigate the poverty and inflation by providing subsidy on utilities and house hold items; all political forces should join hands despite their differences and concerns for the survival of democratic framework in Pakistan, and must avoid politics of criticism but should adopt the policy of reconciliation in order to create the sense of trust among all political allies.
