Islamabad: Asif Ali Zardari has traditionally greeted Sikh pilgrims, Hindus and other minorities on the occasion of Christmas, Holi and now Baisakh
New Delhi: October 21, 2010. Secretary, South Asian Council for Minorities SACM. Mr. Navaid Hamid have condemned attacks on devotees and vandalism during Durga Pooja festival. it matter of great concern that the inebriated mobs including some policemen and security personals have attacked the members of the Hindu minority community during the Durga Pooja festivities in different parts of Bangladesh which has left scores of people seriously injured, frightened and terrorised.
The attacks on devotees needs to be condemned by all those, including the civil society of Bangladesh, who believes in sanity and peaceful co-existence of followers of different faiths in a democratic setup. All those who have instigated and perpetrated the attacks needs to be told in a loud and clear voice that the attacks and inhuman acts to terrorise followers of minority faiths gives not only bad reputation to the nation but also to the faith and religion of the perpetrators of crimes and are not in consonance with the teachings of Islam.
It is heartening to know that the Bangladesh authorities have acted swiftly in some places and have taken strong actions including suspension of the police officials who have been found indulged in acts of vandalism and/or supporting the frenzied mobs indulging in attacks on the minorities during festive season.
South Asian Council for Minorities (SACM) is quite hopeful that the authorities in Bangladesh would do all that is necessary to take storngest measures against culprits including the officials of the law enforcement agencies who have attacked or helped hate criminals to instill confidence in the minorities in Bangldesh
