Islamabad: Asif Ali Zardari has traditionally greeted Sikh pilgrims, Hindus and other minorities on the occasion of Christmas, Holi and now Baisakh
London: September 27, 2010. (PCP) No Christian in Pakistan expects life to be easy but there are times when life is harder than usual and right now is such a time. Since the threat made by a US church to burn copies of the Koran, Christians have been living in greater fear for their lives than usual.
Despite the fact that the church cancelled its plans, our colleague in Pakistan says that Muslim groups have been holding protest rallies across the country almost every day, burning the American flag and effigies of the US President Barack Obama.
Naeem says the worst of the protests are taking place in the Khyber Pakhtoon region and that the level of anger on display is “frightening”.
He has told us how on September 13 he was distributing aid among flood victims in Pubi and Noshera Kalan, when he saw a large rally by Muslims who were shouting chants against the US and brandishing guns and axes. He says it is the first time he has seen Muslim protestors so openly brandishing their weapons.
He gave us this report: “We were scared and prayed that the rally would remain peaceful as they were passing through the Christian area. We knew anything could happen and there have been previous occasions when extremists have sought revenge in the wrong places.”
It is not uncommon for Muslim extremists to seek revenge in Christian communities for the actions of the US or other Western countries, as they have the misconception that local Christians are allies of the West simply because they share the same religion.
Pastor Terry Jones cancelled the burning of the Korans but sadly similar events have taken place in other parts of the US, angering millions of Muslims. It is almost certain that extremists will take advantage of these actions to take their revenge out on innocent Christians.
