ODESSA, TX. An Odessa doctor was arrested Thursday after being indicted on charges that he filed $89,000 in fraudulent claims to Medicaid.
Dr. Athar Niaz Rana falsified treatment on children of low-income parents at the Odessa Asthma and Allergy Clinic, then illegally obtained reimbursement, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and the FBI say.
The allergist was charged with health care fraud for billing Medicaid $262 apiece for specialized allergy tests, most of which were not performed or only partially performed.
"One has to wonder about professionals who sink to such depths, exploiting infants of low-income parents to line their pockets," said Abbott said. "Even more egregious, most of these allergy tests never even took place. Texas taxpayers should be outraged."
The federal charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
