LARKANA: September 6, 2010. (Nazir Siyal) A great human tragedy after Tori breach at Inuds River, millions of people displaced and floods have washed away huge swathes of the rich farmland a back bone economy in upper Sindh districts including Larkana, Kamber-Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Kashmore-Khndhkot and Dadu.
A large scale Gastro/waterborne disease have been broke out among the flood victims fearing more infectious diseases in coming days, though several towns and villages were ruined in flood as a result massive exodus to the safer locations.
On Sunday, a gushing floodwater reached and over-topped the Indus Highway along with Mehar (2 to 3 million population) a largest business city of Dadu district. Surging water after inundation of villages and adjoining areas, flood water pressure on protective embankments of Johi city and inundated its Union Councils.
In Larkana, there is growing number of complaints over the shortage of standard food and medicines, potable water and basic amenities at relief camps and a number of infectious diseases are on the rise among victims affected of worst floods in the history.
Hundred and thousands at flood relief camps and still staying along road sides, streets, parks, railway lines, play grounds, Canals and other locations, were facing lack of health and standard food, despite of flood survivor’s appeals to the government to provide them with required facilities and proper rehabilitation.
Increasing miseries of flood survivors are still beyond, because the floodwaters continued to devastate various parts of Sindh districts including Larkana, Kamber-Shahdadkot, Dadu, Jamshoro, Thatta and others.
There is no available transport by the government and flood affectees of Lashkar Khan, Qazir Arif, Khan Villages and others hire vehicles on higher rates on Rs. 5000, 8000 and 20000 from Mehar to Larkana. Survivors have complained about the shortage of vehicles and high fares.
After mounting the flood pressure on protective embankments of Hamal Lake and its dangerous water level, four gates opened from Hamal Lake in Kamber to reduce the pressure, the flood water now moving thorugh MNV drain towards Warrah, Nasirabad and Mehar a largest business city of District Dadu as well as the major town submergied including K. N Shah, Seeta Road, Phulji, Manghano and Kothi and about 500 villages inundated here on Sunday.
Suprio breach has widened up to 500 feet on protective embankment; recent flood torrent is heading towards Mehar and adjoining areas after the breach at Mehar drain, while. On the occasion, a large number of peoples of Bhan Saeed Abad took out protet rally to protect and Save the city for taking special measures in this regard.
Dadu city physically disconnected by road communications from Larkana and Sukkur via Moro at main bridge on Indus River and K. N Shah, Over 2, 00000 population of Khairpur Nathan Shah has completely submerged, while main markets, National Bank and other areas are under floodwater with some people still marooned in the flooded city areas and waiting to be rescued.
Evacuation by the People from four cornors is continued and shifting to safer places, especially Larkana district and the influx of IDPs from Mehar about 0.2 million population, Warrah, Nasirabad, Phulji, Seeta Road and others have created major troubles of health, food and proper rehabilitation in city because all primary and Government secondary schools, colleges, buildings, parks, grounds and foot paths have been obsessed in present situation.
Special train has run from Larkana to Seetar Road to bring the flood victims and reached back at Moen-Jo-Daro, where the relief camps has been set up to accommodate them told the sources. Larkana administration has claimed that they will set up tent cities from three entry sides, to shift the marooned people and vacate the government educational institutions to start education activities that are suspended for a long.
Meanwhile, Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has said that present government believes in the services to the masses and we will not left them alone in this critical situation, he expressed these views while distributing the food stuff and clothes for Eid among flood victims here at Girls College Larkana, Lahori Muhalla and Gajan Pur School on Sunday.
He further said Sindh government is well aware about the problems of flood affected people and all political and civil society stands with masses in such a hard time.
PPP leaders and workers have always served the masses, whether be in a government or in an opposition, he said. He said the rehabilitation and reconstruction work will be started very soon, after the survey and ascertaining damage, destruction of the properties and agricultural crops. Present PPP government will compensate all their losses to the marooned people, so that they can sigh of relief and restart their new life, he assured.
On the occasion, PPP ladies wing leaders Naseeba Channa, Kaneez Fatima chugtai, Dr. Sakina Gaad, Dr. Tanveer Gaad, Bela Sandilo and others were present.
