Pakistan Catholic Bishops Conference observe Prayer Day for flood victims

Lahore; August 25, 2010. (PCP) Pakistan Catholic Bishops Conference PCBC and Caritas Pakistan appealed for Disaster Relief Action during a Day of Prayer observed here today at Catholic Cathedral, Lawrence road, Lahore. The Pakistan Catholic Bishops Conference urged the Christians of Pakistan to come forward to serve the nation financially and as voluntarily. The Catholic Church in Pakistan, Caritas Pakistan and other Catholic organizations had declared August 24, 2010 24th August 2010, as a day of prayer for the flood affected victims and prayers were offered that God may protect us from any further disaster. Archbishop of Lahore, Most Rev. Dr. Lawrence John Saldanha leaded in prayer, Rev. Bishop Sebastian Shaw, Diocesan Executive Sectary Caritas Pakistan Lahore Rev. Fr. Joseph Louis, Caritas Pakistan Lahore Staff and faithful were also present in Payer Day observation. After the service Caritas Pakistan Lahore staff donated a day’s salary for the flood affected. Meanwhile, Mr. Izhaque Bulanda, DMP Coordinator of Caritas Pakistan Multan, have issued report on relief to flood effected victims. He explains that a second massive surge of water into the River Indus over recent days has caused extensive damage to houses and fields while passing through the southern belt of Pakistan's Punjab province. At least 29 people have died, while over 452,000 were reported affected in more than 25000 villages and small settlements across 14 flood-hit districts of Punjab since rivers started swelling in early July. "Flood situation is serious in parts of the districts Layyah and Rajanpur located along River Indus. The same areas were affected by previous surges of floodwater in early July in the district Layyah, In Punjab, farming communities in areas close to the Indus have been worst hit by floods in five southern districts: Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Muzzafargarh and Rahim Yar Khan. An estimated 150,000 people along the Indus has been left in need of emergency supplies, according to humanitarian activists. Response of Caritas Pakistan Multan: On hearing this gruesome incident Disaster Response net work (DRN) of Caritas Pakistan Multan had called the meeting to make a comprehensive strategy to cop up with the disastrous situation in the 7 Districts of the Southern Punjab-Pakistan. To cover 7 affected areas of the Diocese 4 Teams (2 members each) were announced to conduct “Rapid Initial Assessment” for three days (August 4th to 6th, 2010) of the affected areas to access the immediate needs of the communities so that quick support should be provided to the communities of Rajan Pur, DG Khan, Layyah, Bhakkar, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan and Multan Districts. According to Rapid Initial Assessment by Disaster Response Network (DRN) of Caritas Pakistan Multan following immediate needs are reported to step forward for the Humanitarian response in the affected areas. Shelter Food Items Non Food Items WASH (Hygiene) Health (Free Medical Camp) Coordination: Caritas Pakistan Multan is working in close coordination with local Government and Military Official who are working actively in the flood affected areas. Distribution & Medical Camp Teams: One team was formed consisting of following members: Animators 6 Volunteers 6 Doctors 2 Para Medical Staff 2 CPM had also organized one day free medical camp by the kind assistance of Pakistan Army to provide emergency medical treatment, immunization and vaccination services to approximately 450 people for the prevention of epidemic water borne diseases.
