Stop Target Killings in Karachi. By Professor Anjum James Paul

The daughter of the late Syed Raza Haider, an MPA and a victim of target killing in a mosque in Karachi was expressing during an interview to a channel. “I asked papa on phone to come and he said that he would be coming after attending the funeral but he did not come”. There have been 100 target killings so far only in six after the target killing of Syed Raza Haider and 39 lives were taken by the miscreants just after this tragic incident. I have been thinking that the wives, daughters and sisters would have been making calls to their beloved ones and the same response would be from them that they would be coming soon. Voices of the innocent people have been made silence. There are shadows of darkness on the city of lights. People are depressed and in the state of fear. I called my younger brother Qamar who said that he would go out after a better situation. Dozens of buses, trucks, rickshaws and motorbikes have been burnt so far by vicious. Shops, hotels and petrol pumps have been burnt. Houses and huts have been set on fire where poor families were sleeping and in a short while they were shelter less. Such a situation is creating worst psychological effects on the minds of the innocent children, men and women. In such a situation how can one lead a satisfactory and peaceful life? Pakistani people are becoming mentally sick and due to this culture of unrest, intolerance and crimes against humanity are increasing day by day. The culture of looting, corruption, deceiving and depriving the rights of the suppressed class is on its peak. Small girls of age three or four are being raped. We have become a demoralized society. Has someone ever thought who is responsible for this all? We are going to celebrate the Independence Day in a few days but what a tragedy last year in Gojra seven Christian children, men and women were burnt alive on August 1, 2010 and this year on August 2, 2010 thirty-nine innocent people were killed only in a few hours after his killing. On the other hand there is a grave devastation of floods throughout the country in which more than 1203 people have lost their lives, more than 15 million are homeless and starving, 4772 villages have been affected so far. 152 have lost lives in the air crash in near Islamabad. There have been earthquake shocks a few days ago. Is this all the fate of this land? It must also be kept in mind that this all has happened after the killing of two innocent Christian brothers Rashid Emmanuel and Sajid Emmanuel in Faisalabad on July 19, 2010 in the Faisalabad court in a discriminatory law of Section 295 C of the Pakistan Penal Code. Let us think for a while that what have given to this sacred land of ours? We have done nothing but to deceive Pakistan. We have not been sincere with our land and ultimately we see that the people of the same land are killing their country fellows in the name of religion, sect and difference of opinion. When will be we ready to say, “No” to all the evils and say, “Yes” to the values at least for the sake of Pakistan? Let ‘ Papa’ of every child come to his/her house safely. -- Prof. Anjum James Paul is Chairman of Pakistan Minorities Teachers' Association (PMTA)
