HYDERABAD: August 6, 2010. (By Sameer Hussain) As water level is increasing after every hour at Kotri Barrage, the flood fighting activities have been accelerated by the Irrigation department, District Governments and law enforcing agencies in the districts situated along with the bank of River Indus. According to information collected by this office, as many as 257 Relief Camps and 257 Medical Camps were established and 483 boats have been made available at Hyderabad Region while 57 vulnerable points were identified and total population of 272161 in 532 villages in these districts are likely to be affected from the coming super flood.
Besides, the equipments, machinery including Excavators, Dozers , loaders, tractors, trolleys, standby generators, stones, gunny bags, torches and other Abkalani materials have been made available at each vulnerable point and 16 people were deployed on each mile for extensive patrolling and putting strict vigilance on the embankments. In addition to that extensive patrolling of Pak Army, Police and Rangers were being carried out on left and right sides of Indus River to help the Irrigation department and maintain law & order. Whereas control rooms have been established with all lined departments including Irrigation, District governments, Police and Information officers in each district of the Region. While drum beating, warning through media and personal efforts were being made to convince and evacuate the population under threat.
According to details, 39 Relief Camps and 39 Medical Camps were established at District Hyderabad and 33 boats have been made available to meet any eventuality. Besides, 5 vulnerable points have been identified and 25000 people of 35 villages of Hyderabad District are likely to be affected from the coming flood. Similarly 39 Relief Camps and 39 Medical Camps were established and 180 boats have been made available at District Jamshoro where 9 vulnerable points were identified and 48781 people of 94 villages of District Jamshoro are considered under threat. Whereas, 40 Relief Camps and 40 Medical Camps were established and 100 boats have been made available at District Thatta where 26 vulnerable points were identified and 32000 people of 93 villages of District Thatta could be affected. Similarly 96 Relief Camps and 96 Medical Camps were established and 100 boats have been made available at District Dadu where 3 vulnerable points were identified and 99000 people of 217 villages of District Dadu are likely to be affected from the coming flood. In District Shaheed Benazirabad 8 Relief Camps and 8 Medical Camps have been established and 30 boats have been made available where only one vulnerable point was identified and 34410 people of 54 villages are likely to be affected. Likewise, 22 Relief Camps and 22 Medical Camps were established and 25 boats have been made available in District Matiari where 10 vulnerable points were identified and 2970 people of 22 villages are considered under threat. Besides, 17 Relief Camps and 17 Medical Camps were established and 15 boats have been made available in District Tando Muhammad Khan where 3 vulnerable points were identified and 30000 people of 17 villages of District Tando Muhammad Khan are likely to be affected from the coming flood.
In addition to that the Sindh Minister for Fisheries Zahid Ali Bhurgri and Sindh Minister for Special Education Syed Ali Nawaz Shah Rizvi today also continued their inspection visit of the embankments of River Indus to ensure that the vulnerable points identified by them are being re-strengthened. Zahid Ali Bhurgri directed the Irrigation officers to deploy additional force and machinery to complete the task before coming super flood at Kotri Barrage. He also directed the District Administration to keep eatable and other living items available at each Reef Camp and arrange transportation for the inhabitants of River bed for their evacuation to safer places.
The Chief Secretary Sindh azul-ur-Rehman also continued his visit of the Districts facing flood situation on 2nd day. He visited District Matiari today and held meeting with the Irrigation officers and district government Matiari at DCO Office. He directed the officers to ensure that the super flood flow should pass fro their area safely. He also directed the officers of district government to ensure rescue relief works. However, he hoped that this flood would be combat with success.
On other side, the water level at Kotri Barrage was gradually increasing. The reading of water flow at 12.00 Noon today recorded 155000 cusecs at upstream and 132660 cusecs at downstream while 156865 cusecs at upstream and 132660 cusecs at downstream recorded at 06.00 pm today.
