World Wide Campaign Begins On “Plant A Tree And Get Marks”

Bhopal, India: July 28, 2010. (PCP) World wide campaign on “Plant a tree and get marks” began on Tuesday in St. Mary School 2nd Stop, Bhopal. The movement is launched by Vishwa Kalyan Ashram, a Christian Lay Association, in July 2009. The Movement is called Matr Chhav Abhiyan,(Shading the Mother Earth Movement). As part of the world wide campaign the organizers are contacting the governmental and non-governmental organizations and embassies all over the world requesting them to introduce it in their own countries for school children. The Education department under the Human Resource Development, Government of India adopted the programme “Plant a tree and marks” for school children and it is becoming part of the curriculum of Children. After its success to attracting successful response from the people in the Country the movement has began a world wide campaign. Fr. Anand Muttungal, the Director of this movement, said, “This movement is aliened to the education system and if it spreads to the world then it can revolutionize the concept of environmental protection. It has Governmental and non-governmental organizations across the country. Our effort is to get this idea across the glob.” The letter send to very one as part of the programme has clearly stated that “the organization is not interested that those use this programme should use its name but take the concept and use it in the way it fits into particular place.” Fr. Anand Muttungal Says,”We are interested in getting the idea across the globe, I consider this as our gift to God for giving us everything in life.” The programme is very simple. It is introduced as part of the environmental study, it will be a practical project like science. A child who plants a plant which can grow up to a tree and takes care of it will be rewarded. He / she will be awarded up to 25 marks in the examination as per the care taken by the child. The teacher in-charge of the programme can inspect the plant any time. The child who plants will have to put a tag on the plat with name of the school, name of the student with class. It will be treated as a practical project under the environmental study like that of science marks can vary according to the care taken by the child. Sr. Mary Sebastian, Principal of St. Mary Senior Secondary School, said, “We see a lot interest in the children, since it is treated as practical project parents are also taking interest, it became a family affair.” Mrs. Vijay Lakshmi, coordinator of the programme told ,” children are highly motivated to join the programme, it is a well thought of programme, it can defiantly change climate. The organizers say that if we want to bring major change in the society then behavioural change is a must. When a child join this scheme, we give training to care of the nature, environmental protection etc. It will give children an emotional belongingness to earth, our mother. It can change behaviour of children to wards nature.
