LARKANA: July 26, 2010. (By Nazir Siyal) Sindh Educational Development Society Larkana and Pirbhat Women Development Society called an open session on the topic “Violence Against women and its Acceptance in our Society” here at Nizamani Labour Hall Larkana.
On the occasion, women social activists and renowned educationalists Amar Sindhu, Irfana Malah, Professor Rubina Chandio highlighted about the violence against women is the violation of rights, they said the violence over women is an intolerable practice and heinous act being performed by illiterate people.
Speaking during session the participants gave detailed briefing about cases of violence as recorded during 2009. There were total 1384 cases of murders, as 752 in Punjab, 288 in sindh, 266 in NWFP, 39 in Balochistan and 39 in Islamabad and 1977 cases of violence were found of miscellaneous nature and others according to the information.
They further told that 604 cases of honour killings and according to the information 245 in Punjab, 284 in Sindh, 14 in NWFP, 59 in Balochistan and 2 in Islamabad.
Simultaneously, 1987 cases of abduction/kidnapping were found as per data 1698 in Punjab, 160 in sindh, 64 in NWFP, 13 in Balochistan and 52 in Islamabad they said.
In this regard, 608 cases of domestic violence were appeared among 271 in Punjab, 134 in Sindh, 163 in NWFP, 22 in Balochistan and 52 in Islamabad they told.
They further told that 683 cases of suicide reported among 448 in Punjab, 176 in sindh, 43 in NWFP, 10 in Balochistan and 6 in Islamabad, while 928 cases of rape/gang rape were reported and 786 in Punjab, 122 in Sindh, 7 in NWFP, 4 in Balochistan and 9 in Islamabad they said and 274 cases of sexual assault recorded among 227 in Punjab, 44 in Sindh, 0 in NWFP, 2 in Balochistan and 1 in Islamabad as reported.
Although 50 cases of stove burning were reported among 33 in Punjab, 10 in Sindh, 4 in NWFP, 1 in Balochistan, 2 in Islamabad and 53 cases of acid throwing found, as per 42 in Punjab, 9 in Sindh, 1 in NWFP, 0 in Balochistan, 1 in Sindh.
They said that the activists raising the slogans since long to reduce it by highlighting the cases in the print and electronic media time to time and uttered that we have many laws but not their proper implementation into the courts. He also gave the reference of Hudood Ordinance.
They said a woman is considered as equal to the seven holy qurans but now she is also divided into seven peaces in the name of honour, she raised that why it is happening and how long will it go.
They said social activists never be discouraged looking at the case of Hafeezan Bahutto of Larkana. To encourage the participants they said compare the 1970 progress with 2010 progress you will found a change and more struggle by the activists they said. Larkana has appeared as the 2nd number city in the name of killing and violence over women, its sad news to know and draw back for us.
During the participants, Rubina Chandio Zakir Hussain Samo, Javeed Shah, Abd-u-Rahman Bhutto, Nazir Ahmed, Ahmed Ali Sabir chandio and others spoke on the occasion.
