Archbishop bids farewell to Belgian Capuchin Missionary Fr. Daniel Suply

Lahore: June 5, 2010 (By Fr. Inayat Bernard) We are grateful to the services of the Belgian Capuchins who toiled in this land and worked very hard to establish the church in the Punjab over 120 years from 1986.” Archbishop Lawrence John Saldanha was talking to the35 priests and religious from different congregations gathered at St. Mary’s Friay, Gulberg. Lahore on the 4th of June. He said that besides the Italians and Dutch mostly the Belgian Capuchins built the church here. He continued that Fr .Daniel has spent more than thirty years in the formation of the seminarians and the junior sisters. In the presence of the definitor General Fr. Peter Rogers, OFM Cap, the Archbishop expressed his wish that as Fr. Daniel returns to Belgium, he may continue to serve as the secretary of the province. In the prayer for Fr. Daniel, Auxiliary Bishop Sebastian Francis Shaw, OFM appreciated his love for teaching and expressed his joy that Fr. Daniel enjoying good health at the age of 77 will continue to provide guidance to the vice province here in Pakistan from Belgium. Fr. Abid Habib, OFM Cap, the vice provincial of the Capuchins said that although Fr. Daniel was not his teacher in the class but he learnt a lot from him outside the class. He mentioned that Fr. Daniel is the man of languages and he has influenced him in discipline and dutifulness. Fr. Andrew Nisari, the VG of the Archdiocese of Lahore said that Fr. Daniel was his teacher and he has multiplied himself in the students. He said that the church in Pakistan will always be grateful to him. Fr. Inayat Bernard also the student of Fr. Daniel in 1974 at St .Mary’s Minor Seminary, Lahore said that Fr. Daniel does not believe in half measure but he dedicated himself totally for the formation of future religious leaders of Pakistan. He asked the young priests to follow his life of commitment and zeal for their responsibilities. Fr. Patrick Samuel OFM Cap, formator of Capuchin students in Karachi was the anchor person who highlighted the tireless services of Fr. Daniel. At the end Fr. Daniel Suply OFM Cap thanked Archbishop Lawrence J. Saldanha of Lahore, Bp Sebastian, Fr. Peter Rogers from Rome and priests and sisters present that when he came to Pakistan in 1961, he was assigned to learn the local language and served in three parishes before he came to St. Mary’s Minor Seminary to serve as the professor and later as the rector. He said that the pastoral work was beneficial for the formation work. He acknowledged that he has the love and taste of language that is why he was able to teach local language of the Punjab to the Belgian Capuchins like Frs. Leopold and France. He said that in the years of formation it was not only he who taught the students but he also learnt a lot from them. He expressed his gratitude to God who planned for him to come to Punjab and worked in the Archdiocese of Lahore. He assured his prayers for all.
