Faisalabad: April 14, 2010. (Shazia George) On 10th April 2010, one-day training workshop titled “Community Education for Democracy and Human Rights” was organized by Association of Women for Awareness and Motivation (AWAM) in collaboration with Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD), which was joined by 27 participants from different schools of thought. Suneel Malik (Secretary-NCJP), Shazia George (Coordinator-AWAM), Nazia Sardar, Zafar Iqbal and Farhat Afza were among the facilitators of the workshop held at Al-Yousaf Islamic Centre, Sub-District Tandlianwala in Faisalabad District. The facilitators termed 18th constitutional amendment as positive step towards political stability and promotion of democratic culture in Pakistan. They termed the participation of women in political process as a need of the hour, and emphasized women to acquire CNIC and to register themselves as voters, for casting a vote in favour of a candidate, familiar to the problems of the community, willing to resolve their problems, and capable of leadership on the basis of efficiency. They termed feudalism as an obstacle in the way of true democracy, and held feudalism responsible for all biases and prejudices existing in the society. They said that feudalism had divided the citizens in different classes, so it should be removed to ensure equality of all citizens. The facilitators for the enforcement of real democracy, demanded from the government that: state affairs must be separated from the religion for accepting the fact that Pakistan is a multi-religious state; all the citizens should be provided with equal opportunities and resources, irrespective of any discrimination, and they should be encouraged to contribute in the progress of the country; appropriate measures must be taken to deal with terrorism, extremism, inflation and load-shedding of energy; all new policies and legislation should be formulated through consensus with all parties for political stability; women should be given representation in every field of life in accordance with the proportion of the population, for their empowerment.
