An Open Letter to President of Pakistan demanding public holiday on Good Friday

April 02,2010 Asif Ali Zardari President of Pakistan Your Excellency Mr. Zardari, I am shocked to learn from my common friends in Pakistan that the Good Friday, the most sacred day for every Christian in Pakistan and all over the world, is not a day of Public Holiday in Pakistan. Christians all over the world offer Holy Mass in Churches, including Pakistan celebrating The Paschal Sacrifice of Lord Jesus Christ, The Son of God, who sacrificed Himself on The Cross for the salvation of mankind. It is the fundamental right of every individual Christian of Pakistan to offer this Pascal Mass with a free will and for such practice they must be entitled with a FULL DAY holiday on Good Friday. By denying Good Friday a holiday, is your government denying the rights to worship to the Christians of Pakistan? Here I would like to quote, that when Pakistan was created, the Christians played a major role in its creation believing that they will live safely with all their rights in that country. And Pakistan was created as a secular state. The government of Zia ul Haque, with prejudice assassinated the greatest ideology of Qaid e Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah's dream of a secular Pakistan by declaring it a "Fundamentalist" Islamic Republic of Pakistan. You must remember here that it was the same Zia ul Haque who hanged till death the founder president of Pakistan People Party to dismantle the Secular structure of Pakistan. I take this opportunity your Excellency Mr. President to declare a Day of Holiday all over Pakistan on Good Friday and to declare Pakistan a Secular State. Shelley Keith Benjamin Kathmandu, Nepal
