We all worried when people killed, tortured and imprisoned in Pakistan in the name of blasphemy law. However, we have not been able to find the permanent solution. I would like to share this column published in the daily “Dawn Newspaper Pakistan” on the 19 January, 2010. With reasonable certainty, during a seminar organised by People’s Resistance (PR), Islamic scholar Dr. Khalid Zaheer confirmed the notion that there is no blasphemy law in Islam. Despite the fact that the law has no Islamic underpinnings, successive democratically elected governments in Pakistan have proved reluctant to remove this controversial law from the books. The fact is, the law has little to do with religion, and everything to do with the changing socio-political climate in Pakistan. It is important to remember that the Blasphemy Law emerged – and endures – in a particular social context, and is thus beholden to the history of Pakistan.” Although we are trying our level best to raise this issue, and thanks to Almighty God we have tremendously progressed last year, with the help of media and civil society. Nevertheless, we are not succeeded to get rid of completely. I would like you to please find some solutions, positive actions, non-emotional thoughts: • How to reverse blasphemy law to its original position? • How our minority members of National Assembly Pakistan could take the advantage to present the bill in NA, to reverse blasphemy law to its original position before Zia-ul-Haq’s amendment? • What are your suggestions to eliminate this law in the light of Jawaid Ghamdi’s book and Dr. Khalid Zaheer’s speech? • What would be the best action we must take to abolish this law? • Do you think this would be an advantage for minorities Ministers, and members to take-up this matter ASAP? All liberal parties PPP, MQM & ANP are in the coalition Government. How they can take the advantage to present the bill in NA to reverse blasphemy law or remove from Pakistan Panel Code?
