London. July 2. Following extensive lobbying by Barnabas Fund supporters forty British MPs have signed up to an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons expressing support for converts suffering for their faith and calling for reforms to cruel traditional punishments for apostasy. Barnabas Fund launched a major international campaign at the beginning of 2003 focusing on the Islamic law of apostasy, a law which teaches that all adult male Muslims who convert to another faith should be put to death, and which results in prejudice towards converts and widespread suffering across the Islamic world. Barnabas Fund supporters have been lobbying and writing letters to their MPs, the Prime Minister, the Prince of Wales and the Muslim Council of Britain. Early Day Motion 1290 states "That this house supports liberal Muslims, human rights campaigners and others who are calling for an end to cruel traditional punishments for apostasy" and "urges governments and religious communities everywhere to recognize that freedom does not exist where people have not the Liberty to convert and practice faiths".
