A Christian family living in Pakistan has been granted a special immigration visa to live in Canada and apply for landed immigrant status. Hear about their religious persecution back in Pakistan.
The family of a child who was sexually assaulted and left for dead in Pakistan because her dad refused to convert to Islam was cheered and given a standing ovation at a west-end church yesterday.
Munir Masi, 37, with wife Sajda, 35, and their five children aged three to 11, met with Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and others who were instrumental in spiriting them to freedom in Canada on Dec. 12.
The child was sexually assaulted and left to die on a roadside after Masi refused to convert to Islam from Christianity.
The family went into hiding as relatives of the man convicted of the assault vowed revenge, their lawyer and church officials said.
"We would like to thank Canada for allowing us to come here," Masi said through an interpreter at the Toronto Airport Christian Fellowship on Attwell Dr. "We are happy to be in a free country and my family is adjusting to life here."
The children are enrolled in school and getting used to the cold weather, he said.
"My kids are happy to be free," Masi said. "They can go now go to school and play outside with friends."
Kenney, who was moved by the case, was given a plaque by church officials for his help in resettling the family.
He issued a minister's permit to bring the family here.
They can now apply for landed immigrant status.
"We are helping this family by giving them new lives," Kenney told about 300 congregation members. "People have faith in Canada and they come here to find a new home for their families."
Rev. Majed El Shafie, of One Free World International, who made three trips to Pakistan to help the family, said they were hiding from extremists for three years.
"We are extremely happy with the outcome," El Shafie said. "People from every race and background are here today to support this family."
Toronto lawyer Chantal Desloges said it was a "long and dangerous road" to get the family here.
"I am so relieved that they are safe," Desloges said. "The kids have opportunities and can grow up in a free society."
