PFUJ condemns suicide attack on Peshawar Press Club, `Journalists cannot be terrorized by attacks’

ISLAMABAD: Dec 22, 2009. (PCP) The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has strongly condemned the suicide attack on the Peshawar Press Club which caused the death of four persons, including employees of the press club, and injuries to about 20 others. The blast occurred on the main gate of the club when a suicide bomber tried to enter the building, but was stopped by the security men posted there, and in the process the security official lost his life. The attack caused massive damage to the building of the club. A large number of journalists were present inside the club to attend a press conference of a provincial minister, but they luckily remained safe. According to Yousaf Ali Secretary General Khyber Union of journalists, one employees of press club was killed in attack. While five employees and a cameraman of the news were also injured. In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the PFUJ stated that the attack on the Press Club has exposed the claims of masters and patrons of the Taliban and other terrorist groups who say that they are fighting war for the cause of Islam and that they believe in the teachings of the Holy Quran and Sunnah. “Islam is a religion of peace, tranquility, brotherhood, whereas the Taliban believe in enforcing their own rule, and are indulging in terrorism for their ulterior motives," the PFUJ stated. The attack on the Peshawar Press Club is a direct attack on the journalist fraternity. Neither we would tolerate such acts of terrorism, nor can we be terrorised by such horrible acts, the PFUJ statement said. The statement further said that media persons in the NWFP, Balochistan and other sensitive areas are constantly being threatened by terrorist groups, including Taliban, in order to stop media persons from giving any news comments about their anti-people activities and terrorist acts in the media. The PFUJ endorsed the call of its affiliated - Khyber Union of Journalists for observing three days mourning to condemn the attack. The PFUJ has asked the government to ensure security for media offices and journalists in all over Pakistan. “it is duty of government to ensure the safety of media workers and media offices as there are reports that terrorist can also target media in current wave of terrorism.” The PFUJ has saluted to bravery of martyred police official who laid down his life and save the carnage. The PFUJ termed the terrorists attack on Press Club Peshawar as covered and made it clear that media persons would not now down by such acts of terrorisms and would continue fair, and factual reporting, come may. to date with what you do online.
