Bhopal, India: December 17, 2009. (PCP) Christians in Bhopal distributed the woollen clothes to poor people living in villages, which have been discarded by the rich for being either old fashioned or unfit to use. Other-vice these clothes would have become woollen waste emitting carbon dioxide. The woollen clothes were collected from people of the city jointly by Dainik Baskar News Paper, (A leading news paper in North India), and Bhopal unit of the Isai Mahasangh, (IMS, Confederation of Christians) and Matr Chaav Abiyan,(Shading the Mother Earth Movement). The co-organizer of the programme Fr. Anand Muttungal says, "When one kilogram woollen clothes are burnt, approximately five micro grams per cubic meter carbon dioxide is generated, if they are thrown in aerobic condition; it can cause degradation of land. It affects the green house. Every year tones of woollen clothes are discarded as waste by people in the city." He said, "This will not only help the Save Earth Movement but also create awareness and motivate the rich people to help the poor with what is not used and extra with them." Fr. Muttungal says, "People might think how it is going to help global warming, if not today after sometime these woollen clothes will become waste but if we work towards it earnestly it can help global warming by helping people use clothes maximum before discarding. Secondly when the villagers get woollen clothes they will not burn wood as much they would have burnt to keep them selves warm during the winter season." A coordinator of the programme Richard D' Silva told, "it is a helping hand to poor people living in the villages. We identified such villages where people are in really needed of warm clothes." The programme started with a ten days advertisement placed on the News Paper requesting people to contribute their woollen clothes which have gone short and not fit to wear or unused. There were thirty centres around the city where people gave their extra clothes to be given to poor people. The volunteers selected better ones and distributed to poor people in the villages. The programme will cover areas where The programme was inaugurated at Avli Kheda, a village hundred kilometres away from Bhopal . Fr. Francis Scaria of Bhopal Archdiocese who works in this village for the development of this area says, "This is a very poor village where people depend on farming based on rain. Once rain begins this village gets cut off from other villages and town, people have to walk many kilometres everyday for purchasing and medicine. We have a government school up to 4th Class with two teachers. The clothes distribution programme has helped people a lot." He also said that I will also motivate people to work for environmental protection. There were about four hundred people including children who benefited from this programme. A beneficiary Ram Prasad praised the programme. He says that this has given us a lot of good clothes. When we asked him about the environmental value involved in the programme, he said, "I do not know about it but we received some clothes, we do thank you." The organizers say that this campaign is to take place in villages which are away from the cities and large number of people working in stone crushers in and around Bhopal .
