Lahore. June 5. Aslam Masih a middle age Christian, resident of Mamoun Canjan, Faisalabad was charged under blasphemy law in 1998. He is an illiterate person who was accused of giving a written Taveez (contain Quranic verses) to Khadim Hussain (Muslim) to be tied around the neck of his dog, which he totally denied. When this news reached the people of this village they gathered in the mosque and decided to register a blasphemy case against Aslam Masih. He was then beaten up by a mob and dragged to the police station. Because of being illiterate he is not able to read and write but the mob and police did not believe him and registered a case against him under the blasphemy law. After a long confinement in Faisalabad Jail (where another Victim of Blasphemy law, Ranjha Maish is confined) when his case was brought before the court on 7 May 02, the Additional Sessions Judge of Faisalabad, Mian Safdar Saleem sentenced him for life imprisonment twice and fined Rs.1, 00, 000 too for having committed blasphemy under section 295 B and C. But the Lahore High Court's Judge, Justice Najam -ul- Zaman acquitted Aslam Maish from blasphemy charges. This is another case of this year after acquittal of Saleem and Rasheed (charged under blasphemy law), which is represented by CLAAS.
