MANGALORE: December 2, 2009. The Bangalore Archdiocese cancelled its annual Bible Quiz as the Tamil speaking Catholics and Kannada speaking Catholics had a raw over the language used in liturgy. The quiz had become a vital part of the cultural events of the archdiocese for some years now. Thousands of students gathered from various parishes of the Archdiocese used come together in St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary for the quiz including several cultural activities like dances, drama and singing. The event usually comes to a close with the students visiting the Bible Museum within the Seminary premises. This year the venue had been set at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Bangalore. And the Kannada, the state language, speaking Catholics threatened to disrupt the event saying that most of the prizes last year were given away to the Tamil Students. The migrant Tamil speakers are from the neighboring Tamilnadu, and the majority in the Catholic archdiocese while the native Kannada speaking people form the minority. Both demand their language to be the official language of the liturgy practiced in the archdiocesan churches. The fight has been on for sometime now. Some priests who are involved in the controversy also had been arrested earlier for disruption of the liturgy and an Episcopal ordination. The priests who wish to have peace in the diocese say that the Quiz programme was intended to unite the fighting groups, and lately it had become a cause for division among the catholic fold. The rector says that the seminary cancelled the event as the dispute defeated its ‘original motto.’
