LAHORE: State-run television on Friday night carried a report in its main news bulletin about the famed Cathedral of Resurrection here. The church is an integral part of Lahore's architectural landscape and its status as a cultural icon is unchallenged, Pakistan Television quoted a senior clergymen as saying. The Cathedral of the Resurrection is one of the oldest churches in Lahore. It was built in 1887, and not 1877 as erroneously mentioned by the Pakistan Television (PTV) report. Its towers and red brick and pink sandstone exterior are visible from several points un the city. The construction of the Cathedral was supervised by the architect John Oldrid Scott in the time of Bishop French. Scott chose to build it in the Gothic style. "This cathedral is part of Pakistan's history and its recognition as such makes us feel proud," said Bishop of Lahore Alexander John Malik. "For everyone here in Pakistan it is a historic and cultural monument." The Rt Rev. Malik is the only Pakistani Christian to receive the Sitara-e-Imtiaz--the country's highest civilian award. The award was conferred upon him in August 2000. In recent years, the church's bells have been a subject of great interest. Originally the frame for the bells was made to accomodate eight, but only six of them arrived from England. They were cast in 1903 by John Taylor & Co. of Loughborough. The largest among them weighs about 1 ton.
