Islamabad: Asif Ali Zardari has traditionally greeted Sikh pilgrims, Hindus and other minorities on the occasion of Christmas, Holi and now Baisakh
UK: September 18, 2009. (PCP) We are deeply concerned by the ongoing persecution of Christians in Pakistan. Whilst Pakistani Christians are still trying to recover from the trauma of the attacks in Gojra and Korian, several other incidents have taken place. These include a cleric led mob attacking, yet again, innocent Christians in 'Orange Town;’ a Christian being forced into hiding after a Muslim cleric accused him of committing blasphemy; and another Christian being falsely charged under the blasphemy law.
The most shocking news we have received recently concerns Fanish Masih, a Christian whose body was found hanging in Sialkot Jail, where he was sent following alleged charges of blasphemy. We have been told that there is strong evidence to suggest that he was murdered but the killing has been disguised as suicide.
Christians are still living in fear as the local police are compounding the feeling of insecurity by arresting Christians in Gojra while perpetrators are being released.
They have contributed to making innocents look like the culprits, increasing the risk of attacks against Christians.
The Governor of Punjab, Salmasn Taseer of PPP, has issued a statement suggesting the blasphemy laws should be repealed to protect minorities. This has been rejected by Saad Rafique MP, of the Muslim League (N- Nawaz Sharif,) in a counter statement. Mr Rafique is not the first member of the PML-N to oppose repeal - several MPs including Dr. Sher Afghan Niazi and Ejaz ul Haq have strongly rejected the idea. Dr. Niazi even claimed that as Pakistan is an Islamic state the issue is not fit for discussion in Parliament.
It is a dismal and appalling situation but we have to continue on in our struggle as groups and individuals whilst continuing to pray and act with wisdom.
