Karachi: August 18, 2009. (PCP report) Pakistan Christian Congress PCC leaders rejected Freedom Resolution presented by Shahbaz Bhatti, Federal Minister for Minorities and proposed Minorities Protection Bill by PPP government terming it an excuse to repeal blasphemy law. Dr. Nazir S Bhatti, President of Pakistan Christian Congress in a statement said “Pakistan Christians demand repeal of blasphemy law which endangers life and property of Christians in Pakistan” “The successful Black Day on August 11, 2009 by millions of Pakistani Christians demanded repeal of blasphemy law and government must accept verdict of people” said Nazir Bhatti The Minority Freedom resolution was adopted by National Assembly of Pakistan which read freedom of speech and expression for minorities on August 13, 2009, without any agenda to ensure such rights promised by founder of Pakistan. The resolution was presented by Shahbaz Bhatti, Federal Minister for Minorities after attack on Christians in Gojra Punjab where Muslim militants burnt alive Christian women and children. Nazir Bhatti said that governments announces such resolutions and bills to satisfy Christians but never tries to root out blasphemy law which have endangered freedom and equality of religious minorities in Pakistan. After legislation of Section 295 B and C PPC by Pakistan Peoples Party PPP and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz PML(N) governments the violence against Christians escalated and so for 602 have been arrested under this law and hundreds of homes burnt on accusations of blasphemy in Pakistan. Nazir Bhatti added “ Government is trying to mislead international community by freedom resolution and protection bills and to undermine unity of Christians expressed on “Black Day” on August 11, 2009 through out Pakistan” Dr. Nazir Bhatti appealed US administration, EU and UNO Secretary General to press upon government of Pakistan to repeal blasphemy law which is violation of human rights charter. He further stated that Christian-Muslim harmony and religious freedom was exemplary in Pakistan prior to legislation of blasphemy law in 1982.
