Pakistan: August 13, 2009. (PCP report) In a message to Mr. Raymond Durrani, a Canadian based human right activist Brigadier Retd. Samson Sharaf writes: Dear Raymond, I'll answer you questions: 1. Yes the government through criminal delay failed to provide protection to Christians. This delay went beyond to neglect to complicity because the police though being present stood as a bystander. This is one area in which I have brought the government under heavy criticism and demanded investigations that set the ball of accountability rolling. This is also the demand of all human right groups and most political parties in Pakistan that include PPP, PTI, PMLQ, MQM etc. The fact that the entire Pakistani press and Electronic media have condemned the incident in favor of Christians and discuss it day in and day out reflects a sympathy for the victims and a sense of pluralism. Though a tragedy, it has also brought various segments of society closer to each other and this is a positive development. 2. Yesterday I visited Gojra with the top hierarchy of PTI. The urgency of my visit was underlined by a counter Report registered by Muslims of Gojra against Christians and the fact that communal tensions were escalating each day. I first visited the Muslim communities with the PTI and heard their side of the story. Their story of course was grossly spinned and more a propaganda perception than reality. In the end of the session I was introduced and asked to give my views. My views did have a positive effect in cooling temperatures. 3. We then visited the local Parish and took all these Muslim opinion makers with us. There I highlighted the role of Christians in the area during the past 120 years particularly in setting up villages in the desert to what is now the heartland of Punjab. I also talked of the Christian Votes for Jinnah in the Legislative assembly and how it swung the Majority Pakistan's way and the effect Christian villages had on the award of Radcliffe Award. Then I talked of the Role of Christians in education, health, charity, resettlement of refugees from India, government services and defense. I also mentioned the Pakistan Christian League that worked with PML to make Pakistan and my father to headed the Balochistan Chapter. I particularly highlighted the martyrdom of Christian army officers and men in the present war against militancy and asked many of them knew that even Christian soldiers were beheaded. We then visited the hospital and saw both Christian and Muslims admitted there. At the end we went to the burnt colony. At the end most Muslims showed regret over the incident and admitted that no one had ever told them what Christians had done for the country. So in a highly charged atmosphere, my intervention however insignificant served to cool temperatures and move towards making the first abetment of a bridge. I feel that this is from where we need to move forward. We cannot afford animosity and we all have to coexist and Pakistan is very much our country. So while we continue to ask from criminals to be brought to justice, we must also seek communal harmony and move forward. God Bless
