Christian Social Link UK presented petition to Pakistani government to repeal blasphemy law: By Taskeen Khan
His Excellency Mr Wajid Shamasul Hasan
The High Commissioner for Pakistan
35-36 Lowndes Square
London. SW1X 9JN
Dated: August 11, 2009
Dear Sir
On behalf of the undersigned I wish to draw your attention to the appalling situation of the minorities living in Pakistan. Just in the recent months, periodically and horrendous attacks on Christians living in Pakistan such as the incidents of Gojra, Kasur (Punjab) and Kotri (Sindh) which claimed many innocent lives has shocked the world. The feelings of insecurity and deprivation among the minorities have grown even higher than ever before.
Sir, you may already be aware that very cleverly minorities have been keeping away from the political system of the state for years. In a democratic society, to have two different political and electorate systems for the people living in one country make no sense. The apartheid and corrupted political system is to blame for a severe discrimination in all walks of life against the minorities living in Pakistan. The rift between the Muslim majority and the minorities has been widely broadened.
Sir, it has been proven and accepted by the Pakistan government officials and the moderate Muslims that so called “blasphemy law” is out of date to the modern societies and has been merely used to settle personal scores by the people from the Muslim community. Amazingly, until now none of the victims of blasphemy have actually been convicted by the court of law but many of them were brutally killed only by the accusers.
Those Christian leaders, who supported the founder of Pakistan Mr. M. A. Jinnah during the movement of Pakistan, have been totally ignored by the education system in Pakistan and that has developed a sense that Christians hadn’t played their part in the formation of Pakistan. Therefore, it reflects that the country belongs to the majority and should only rule by the Muslims. During the geographical dispute over the west Punjab province, it was a Christian leader Mr. S P Singha who then supported Mr Jinnah. Speaking at a reception held by the Christian political leaders on November 20, 1942 in the honour of Mr M A Jinnnah, the founder of Pakistan said,” if you will join us we will be forever grateful to you.” The deputy speaker of the first legislative assembly of Pakistan was a Christian. Sir, even the first constitution of Pakistan was prepared by a prominent Christian figure Mr justice A R Cornelius. The Christians played important role during the wars against its neighbouring country, Group Captain Cecil Chaudhary was decorated with meddles for his gallantry services for the country.
Sir, I would like to quote the words of the first prime minister of Pakistan Mr Liaquat Ali Khan during the ceremony of approving the national flag,” This flag is not only for the minorities currently in the country, but will also represent those who eventually will be in Pakistan. This is not the flag of any political party or sect. It is the flag of all Pakistan.”
After the formation of Pakistan, The Christians rendered their services in the field of education and health but sadly were not accepted as a part of the country due to the apathy of the main population which rules the country.
Sir, today our beloved country stands at the cross-roads of self destruction due to ethnic violence, terrorism, religious intolerance and deteriorated economy, above all there is a significant division and hatred between the people that causing uncertainty and destabilization in the country, the reasons may be vary for this situation but definitely we need to introduce and implement a new and a fresh system to save our country.
Sir, therefore I would like to request your government to consider our demands to avoid further mistreatment against the minorities living in Pakistan. I look forward to hear from you.
With kindest regards
Christian Social Link UK – Voice of Pakistani Christians (Organisers of the Protest)
