The Victims of Blasphemy Law; By John Bosco

The recent occurrence of Bahmani Wala village in District Kasur, Punjab is the continuation of similar episodes from the past 2 decades. However, long suffering, injustice and likewise issues are normal part of Pakistani Christians from the past 62 years. I am not going to debate other than the recent incident. This is not only shocking news for the entire Pakistani Christian Community but this time every Christian is thinking? Am I a Pakistani Citizen? If yes then why I treated 3rd class citizen? What are my rights as a Pakistani citizen? Why Govt always treated Christians in this way? Why the non-state actors backed by the police, clerics and then the radical Govt official of Pakistan? Why the Pakistani Government forgot the mission of Quaid-i-Azam – founder of Pakistan? "In any case Pakistan is not going to be a theocratic state to be ruled by priests with a divine mission. We have many non-Muslims-Hindus, Christians and Parsis -- but they are all Pakistanis. They will enjoy the same rights and privileges as any other citizens and will play their rightful part in the affairs of Pakistan." Quaid-i-Azam, Feb. 1948 [10] It is learnt through the news that the blasphemy charge was stemmed from a trivial quarrel between a Christian driver and a Muslim motor cycle rider which later led to the intervention of a local Muslim priest, who charged the driver and other Christians of blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed, Pakistan Christian Post reported. The incident happened at Bahmani Wala village in District Kasur, Sardar Masih, 38, a tractor driver had asked way to Mohammed Riaz who is blocking the way with his motor-cycle, but the latter became angry and abused Masih as “low caste” how he dare asked him? A scuffle took place between both of them which, later, became reason of a critical incident. Riaz contacted Qari Lateef, a local clergyman who is known for his infamous blasphemy cases in Kasur. Qari Lateef urged Muhammad Riaz to plot a blasphemy accusation against Sardar Masih and other Christians. SLMP fact finding team found that the Muslim cleric Qari Lateef announced through loudspeaker accusing Christians of the village of committing blasphemy. He announced Christians have made derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad therefore they are liable to death. Riaz and others called hundred of Muslims from surrounding villages as well. The angry mob of Muslims, shouting on Christians, attacked their houses and started destroying everything. They set many houses of Christians on fire, looted their money and valuables, tortured Christian men and women of the village and fled away from the spot. It is very sad that this incident took place in 2009, despite the fact that there are more than 50 private TV channels operating in Pakistan. However, this breaking news did not cover by any one of them? The only reason I understand and am sure most of other Christians are aware, the electronic media do not want this news to be aired so that this matter could be highlighted to the international communities. The entire Pakistani Christian Community is somewhat surprise the attitude of the electronic media. I am thankful to Daily Time, Pakistan, some other newspapers and our Christian newspapers, which demonstrated solidarity and brought this news to us. No one has forgotten what had happened in the cases of Mukhtaran Mai, and the girl beaten by the Taliban in Swat. Both these stories were highlighted around the globe and for almost 1 month in the headlines of all these channels, even the story of Mukhtaran Mai was a hot issue till the final judgement. As a Pakistani everyone is looking for a justice, but it seems that justice is only provided when this is backed by the renowned barristers cum politicians to achieve the political goals. The report from the Class stated that the attackers also assaulted many of the women and young girls in the village, with one girl - identified only as N - made to run through the village naked. [1} How shameful? How insulted? How startling for the parents? Where are those lawyers and Judges who took the oath in the name of justice? Is Pakistani Constitution is made to protect and provide justice to Muslim only? Is this not double standard for Muslim and non-Muslim? Why the Justice is not provided at the lower level (at the Thana level). Why the FIR is not registered against the culprits, when it is requested by the poor citizen? I am sure in few days the process would be in full swing or might be possible it has already been started through the selected minority leaders, and the representatives from the Punjab Govt to visit and negotiate with the victims’ families by repairing their homes and giving some financial help. This is the responsibility of the Govt to project the lives & goods of the citizen, and provide justice to the victims. In this case the Muslim cleric accused Christians of blaspheming against Islam's holy prophet Muhammad and encouraged local Muslims to kill them without knowing the facts. Who gave him power to motivate Muslims to kill Christians? It is learnt through the news that the blasphemy charge was stemmed from a trivial quarrel between a Christian driver and a Muslim motor cycle rider which later led to the intervention of a local Muslim priest, who charged the driver and other Christians of blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed, Pakistan Christian Post reported. I urge the honourable President, Prime minister of Pakistan, concerned official, Chief Justice of Pakistan & other judges to take this issue very seriously. Why not this Muslim cleric Qari Lateef, a local clergyman who is known for his infamous blasphemy cases in Kasur, who urged Muhammad Riaz to plot a blasphemy accusation against Sardar Masih and other Christians. A blasphemy case must be registered against him and Muhammed Riaz both of them should be punished, and the punishment should be according to the law We can’t stop such incidents until and unless the master minded (right culprits) should be punished, who falsely involve innocent Christians to settle their personal disputes. This is frightening for the poor Christians who lived in the small villages are almost victimized everyday but sadly they can not raise their voices as they live so much under pressure. Federal Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti gave his statement. Quate: Federal Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti told Daily Times he had immediately ordered that an FIR be registered after he visited the area. He said he had expressed solidarity with the victims and asked a team to assess the losses that they had suffered. “We will protect the rights of the minorities for sure. The culprits behind this entire episode will not be spared and punished. Justice will be provided,” he said. He said staging a protest was everyone’s right [6} .unquote I would like to draw the attention of the readers regarding the statement of Federal Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti that FIR is registered on his order after he visited? Don’t you think this is the right of every citizen to register the FIR against the other party if they are persecuted through them? However the system does not allow in Pakistan to register the case, even the Thanadar and sipahi protect the offenders not the victims. He further said he had expressed solidarity with the victims and asked a team to assess the losses that they had suffered. Can I ask him is there any way he could bring back their confidence? Can he eliminate the fear after they have been attacked by 600-700 mobs? How difficult would be for them to live with them? Can he bring back them in the normal life? How can he bring to the normal life to a girl who molested in the hands of culprits? The report from the Class stated that the attackers also assaulted many of the women and young girls in the village, with one girl - identified only as N - made to run through the village naked. He said the culprits behind this entire episode will not be spared and punished. Justice will be provided. I don’t know which justice he is talking about? So far I remember the justice was only provided to the offenders not to the victims, and history revealed there was not a single genuine case, all of the blasphemy cases registered against Christians are false in which the innocent Christian lost their lives, properties, respects & valuables. If the honourable Minister is really serious to provide the justice to the wounded Christians, so this is the time to raise the issue of blasphemy law, 295-C and other clauses, which are hanging like swords on the neck of Christians, should be removed from the Pakistani constitution forthwith. I would like to draw the kind attention towards the analogous incident had happened in Shanty Nagar near Shawl, Punjab in 1997. Interestingly this incident took place at the time of Pakistan Muslim League Noon Government in Federal & Punjab, and yet again recent incident in Kasur – Punjab Pakistan Muslim League Noon Government is operating in Punjab. I remember 3 years back Govt of Pakistan raised an issue of Hadood Ordinance through which many innocent women punished owing to the false statement of men against the women. Thus it was decided to debate on every TV channels across the country. These channels have invited Muslim Teachers, Professors from different denominations of Islam, as a result public motivated to build a consensus and finally it was discussed in the parliament and removed from the constitution. Pakistan's late dictator, Gen. Mohammed Zia ul-Haq, introduced the laws, known as the Hudood Ordinance, in 1979 to appease Islamic political groups opposed to the secularization of Pakistani society. It is not hidden from any one that the 295-C and such clauses were deliberately included in the constitution to achieve the political support. Pakistan's late dictator, Gen. Mohammed Zia ul-Haq in order to maintain his Govt he created Federal Council (Majlis-e-Shura) consisting of such persons as the President may, by Order, determine. This Shura consisted of like minded people as they were selected not elected, and even if they were elected but the PPP was not included. As I stated above he needs to protect his seat thus he was on the mercy of their decisions, and the blasphemy law and other Islamic clauses included in the constitution to gratify them. History also showed that his successor Mian Nawaz Sharif ex Prim Minister of Pakistan followed his footsteps The October 1990 elections brought the Islamic Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) into power. In addition to a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, the alliance acquired control of all the four provincial assemblies and enjoyed the support of the military and the President. Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, as leader of the Pakistan Muslim League, the most prominent party in the IJI, was elected Prime Minister by the national assembly. He emerged as the most secure and powerful Pakistani Prime Minister since the mid-1970s. The Pakistani Islamic Blasphemy law, Section 295/C of the Pakistan Penal Code, is vague and susceptible to abuse, but carries a mandatory death penalty, with practically no right to bail and is, therefore, inherently oppressive, unjust and unethical. It is widely abused as an instrument for terrorizing political opponents and members of religious minorities, and for settling political, sectarian and petty rivalries. This is nothing less than religious terrorism through the abuse of the state apparatus and the civil law. In 1986 General Zia revised it again to be more strictly in accordance with the Sharia, and finally in 1992 it was revised again when the death penalty was made mandatory under the democratically-elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. It is evidently proved now a day that the decisions taken under the pressure of religious parties totally destroyed the country’s image, economy and sidelined Pakistan from all over the world. Whether this is Talban Policy, Hadood Ordinance or Talban branded Islam is completely failed. I would like to request the renowned TV anchors, columnists, writers and others to please debate this hot issue invite Pakistani Christians, minority leaders and Liberal scholar from Islam to review this blasphemy law 295-C, which introduced to achieve the political milestone. Hurry up this is vital issue for the minorities.
