Faisalabad, Pakistan: July 3, 2009. (PCP report) “Community Education for Women Rights” was topic of discussion in a consultation meeting of Non-governmental Organizations of Faisalabad City held in office of AWAM . Twenty two representatives of different NGOs namely WORD, ASDP, SAP,EDEN, PCWO, DAWN, Maimar, Muthida Welfare Society and Light of Hope actively participated in the consultation. The prime objectives of the consultation were to analyze customary practices against women, social behaviour, and Govt. Policies & reform in laws for development of women, and to set an action plan for the promotion of women rights. The participants said, “The widespread confrontations of violence against women actually need the serious attention of every common man in the society.” “Different discriminatory customs are still in practices and many women are slaughtered for the sake of so called honour nevertheless there is no honour in killing” they added. They said “Govt. has passed two bills to safeguard the human rights of women, however a tedious, inefficient medical and judicial system, with few women working in both, discourage most women from reporting abuse and subjecting themselves to more unwelcome male attention and further potential assault.” All the NGOs in the consultation recommended that Government should take appropriate measures to make women in Pakistan aware of their rights and freedoms, including their right to an investigation and redress if abused. The participants NGOs also demanded that more women should be brought into roles in state authorities, particularly into the police sector to strengthen the legal process and encouraging the women victims of violence to report. Naseem Anthony, Executive Secretary AWAM coordinated this consultation meeting.
