Faisalabad: Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the case of Maria Shahbaz, a 13-year-old Christi
Lahore, Pakistan: May 22, 2009. (Pervaiz Mohabbat reports for PCP) ) A falsely accused Blasphemy victim Muhammad Imran S/O Muhammad Ramzan resident of Faisalabad has been released here in Faisalabad on 14th of April 2009. The case was pending since October 2007, due to the pressure from the police, no body was taking up this case, thus Cathe Foundation Pakistan and National Council for Human Rights took up the case in late 2008.
According to the details of the case, M. IMRAN S/O M. RAMZAN was booked in case FIR # 1413/07 Dated 28-10-2007 under section 295-B Pakistan Penal Code with the false allegation that he set into fire the Holy Quran. On the same day Police arrested him and he went through the sever physical torture by the Police. Police kept him in a private torture cell for three days and on 31-10-2007 they sent him to the jail. Due to the physical and sever mental torture by the police, he went into trauma but no medical treatment was given to him in prison just because he was falsely accused in Blasphemy case. After a week in prison when some fundamentalist prisoners came to know that he is involved in a Blasphemy case they attacked on him and tried to kill him. Jail authorities separated him from the other prisoners and locked him up in a single cell but once again did not provide him any medical treatment. He lived there lonely and became a patient of Schizophrenia (a major psychiatric illness).
Case of Muhammad Imran was pending adjudication in court because no lawyer was ready to plead his case due to the fear of religious fundamentalists. In this scenario Pervaiz Mohabbat, Chairman of Cathe Foundation Pakistan (A Christian organization) and Rao Zafar Iqbal Advocate High Courts & the Executive Director of the National Council for Human Rights (a Muslim Organization) took up this case to provide free legal assistance to the victim. Although both of the organizational heads had to face critical time too as this case was backed up by the policy officers and religious extremists. Muhammad Imran ultimately on 14th of April 2009 got released from the prison by the orders of Additional Sessions Judge Faisalabad.
We at this stage not only condemn the discriminatory laws which further create hurdle in the development of people and raise our voice for the abolition of these laws particularly 295 A, B & C.
