AWAM holds Community Education for Women Rights

Faisalabad, Pakistan: May 19, 2009. (PCP) A training workshop titled Community Education for Women Rights was organized on 16-17 May 2009 by Association of Women for Awareness & Motivation (AWAM) at Tariq Middle School, Hajwery Town. 34 Muslim and Christian participants (male and female) of different trades participated in this workshop from 15 union councils. The keynotes of the workshop were to extend and multiply the awareness regarding women rights and to train volunteers for highlighting discriminatory traditions and customs contradictory to constitution and still in practice. Naseem Anthony (Executive Secretary-AWAM), Nazia Sardar, Afsheen Patras, Zafar Iqbal and Qaiser Danial (EDEN Organization) were the main resource persons of the workshop. Mr. Naseem Anthony said, “There still exists such customs and traditions in our society which are contradictory to fundamental rights as granted in constitution”. Government must introduce laws to snub such lethal customary practices against women for ensuring women empowerment. “The futilely and decline in society prevails unless gender based traditions are reviewed with changing time and conditions”, they added. He further condemned few feudal and ulema those are not willing to empower the women and keep them away from development fields. Ms. Nazia Sardar said, “It is the prime responsibility of state to ensure social, economic, cultural and political rights of all citizens irrespective of gender discrimination”. The gender discrimination in the society is on the rise despite ratification of CEDAW convention of United Nation by Pakistan, which negates the principles of equal rights and human status”. Ms. Afsheen Patras said,”unequal distribution of resources, growing population, outmoded customs and traditions and gender discrimination assisted the violation of women rights to accelerate their unequal existence in the society”. Mr. Zafar Iqbal said, “Aggravation on women keeps them out from all kinds of activities in the society which snub mental capacities by which they can positively contribute in the society live happily in their families”. “Women are tortured mentally; as a result, they keep their mouth shut and get astray to unethical units of life”, he added. Mr. Qaiser Danial said, “Women get less reward as compared to men despite working side by side to men in all spheres of life”. “They are barred to participate in the mainstream through several hurdles in the cover of cultural and religious restrains”, he added.
