Toronto, Canada: May 14, 2009. (PCP) Attack on Christian neighborhoods in Karachi, murder of Irfan Masih and attack on, Christian village in Harappa, Punjab discussed and strongly condemned. On May 4th, 2009, a delegation led by Shadab Khokhar, Chair, International Christian AWAZ, Canada met Tasadduq Hussain, Consul General of Pakistan, Toronto. The members of the delegation were Grace Khairullah, General Secretary, ‘International Christian AWAZ, Canada’, Akhtar Din, Chair, ‘Asian Christian Alliance Church’, Mississauga, Ontario, Samson Marcus, Executive member, ‘First Asian Canadian Bible Church’, Brampton, Ontario, Rev. Carol Patrick, Pastor In charge, ‘Asian Christian Alliance Church, Mississauga, Ontario, Rev. Wilson Nazim, Pastor In charge, ‘First Asian Canadian Bible Church’, Brampton, Ontario. The present situation of fear, intimidation and religious harassment of the Christians living in Pakistan was discussed with the Consul General, Tasadduq Hussain. The recent wave of Talibanism, their version of Islamization and the systematic persecution of Christians living in Pakistan was the agenda of the meeting. It was brought to the attention of the chief executive officer of Pakistan in Toronto that the recent wave of systematic persecution was an issue of great concern to Canadians of Pakistani Christian background living across Canada. On April 22nd, 2009 a Christian neighborhood, ‘Taseer Colony’ in New Karachi was attacked by the Taliban and 4 Christians were injured in cross fire; 14 year old Irfan Masih was killed. Christian women were held by their hair and dragged in the streets and seniors were physically beaten up. The fundamentalists chalked the walls of the Church which read, ‘Convert to Islam or Die’, ‘the meaning of Islam, Taliban, Taliban’. On May 3rd, 2009 a village in Harappa, Punjab was attacked and 5 Christians arrested and charged with blasphemy. The Islamization, Taliban style started On May 6th, 2007, when flyers were distributed to the Christian residents of Charsadda, NWFP that ‘Convert to Islam or die’. The move of the fundamentalists was shocking and we as a community met the Consul General at ‘Holiday Inn’, Brampton, Ontario. We raised our concerns and fear about the bleak future of the community. The Chair of AWAZ, Shadab Khokhar, even stated that genocide of Christians living in Pakistan is expected in the future. A petition was handed to the government of Pakistan. On June 21st, 2008, in the city of Peshawar, NWFP, a religious gathering was attacked and 16 Christians were taken hostages. No doubt the kidnapped were released on June 24th, 2008. We as a community met the Consul General and handed a petition to the government of Pakistan. Delegation led by AWAZ chair, Shadab Khokhar. The recent attack on Christian neighborhood’s across Pakistan, constant and strong threats of the Taliban. ‘Convert to Islam or die’ seems to be the slogan of the day in Pakistan. The feeling of insecurity, fear and terror mounting among the Christians living in Pakistan forced a community delegation to make a representation to the government of Pakistan on May 4th, 2009. The delegation stressed on the fact that the Pakistani Christian community living abroad is extremely sensitive to the troubled situation in Pakistan. The entire country is in the grip of terror as religious fanaticism is on the rise. It is obvious that the Taliban want their version of Islam to be the order of the day in Pakistan. It is a worrisome that the Taliban version of Islam has no place and tolerance for the minorities living in Pakistan, we together have to defeat Talibanism in Pakistan, says Akhtar Din. We as a Christian community want to support the government of Pakistan to free Pakistan from the strengthening grip of the Taliban across Pakistan, every Pakistani may it be a Muslim, Sikh, Hindu or a Christian is a victim of Taliban style Islamization, says Shadab Khokhar. Economically weak and politically powerless Christians living in Pakistan have no safe haven in Pakistan and they look up to the government to provide them security and freedom to practice their faith, says Khokhar. The meeting concluded in positive spirit as the Consul General was receptive and sensitive to the feelings of fear and intimidation among the Canadian Christians of Pakistani background. The Consul General promised to pass on the concerns of Pakistani Christian expatriates to the concerned office in Islamabad.
