Dir, Pakistan: April 14, 2009. (Ghulam Ghaus reports for PCP) A grand peace Jirga in Upper Dir area of Sheringal gives a final deadline of 15th April, 8 O’clock to the militants of upper Dir in Doog Dara. In case of denial, the locals will vacate the area & the district administration will be informed regarding the decision of the militants. The Jirga took place in the mosque near Police sation Sheringal. The existence of these militants came into focus few months back when they kidnapped Akhtar Jan Kohistani, a former BBC broadcaster, who was released through jirga efforts. Four police officials have been already killed in the kohistan area of Dir upper and a local police Check Post of Sharmai destroyed possibly by these militants. The jirga was attended by the Ejaz Ahmad, the DPO of Dir Upper & hundreds of elders of twenty four villages of Dhoog Dara. There was a high security alert situation at the time whin Jirga was in progress because there have been incidents of targeting of police vehicles & local police stations in this Kohistan area because of the presence of these militants. The sources told that these militants have shifted their illegal FM radio from Ghazigi to some other area because of the continuous pressure from the locals. This group of militants is lead by Amir Khitab who is supposed to be an Afghan national. Most of these militants are Afghans according to the local sources. Five villaged are under their control naming Shat Kass, Panaghar, Malook Khwar, Doog & Salam Bakey. The Jirga told the locals of these five villages to ask the militants to leave the area before 8 O’clock of 15th April otherwise they themselves should vacate the area for a possible operation against the militants. The local jirga already has given the deadline of 12th April but the militants denied that time to leave the area. ”This time the deadline will be the final & there will be no compromise in this regard in future” a participant of the local Jirga told.
