Faisalabad: Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the case of Maria Shahbaz, a 13-year-old Christi
Sargodha /Johar Abad, Pakistan : April 7, 2009. (Jawad Mazhar reports for PCP) District and Sessions Court of Sargodha ordered to hand over a 7-months-old minor girl to her Muslim mother, entirely on the religious grounds, here in Sargodha city of Pakistan, which is transforming into a hotbed of religious violence and discrimination against Pakistani Christians. PCP established through various well placed sources.
Imran Masih the Christian father of the minor girl Muskaan and resident of Noori Gate Christian Colony town of Sargodha city, tied knots with his Muslim beloved Mumtaz Bibi of Shabbir Colony town of Johar Abad, a rural and remote tehsil (an administrative division) of Sargodha city, situated 60 Kilometers north-west of main Sargodha city.
Family sources of Imran Masih apprised PCP that their Christian son Imran Masih tied wed locks with his Muslim sweetheart Mumtaz Bibi against their compliance about 2 and a half years back. Family said that this marriage came to its logical end after the birth of Muskaan, the newly born baby girl of the couple. They said that they knew that this marriage would end up this way.
Imran Masih, the Christian father of minor girl Muskaan told PCP that after the birth of his daughter he decided to baptize her and raise her like a Christian girl, unlike the persuasion of his Muslim beloved and wife Mumtaz Bibi, who wanted her daughter to be raised up as a Muslim.
Masih said that dichotomy in their plans for their daughter, especially about the faith of the newly born, turned into dispute between them and they used to quarrel over it. Thus they harbored resentment against each other over this issue and finally they parted their ways and divorced.
Imran Masih said that he kept his minor girl Muskaan with him and started rising her according to the teachings of Christ, Masih added, however his former Muslim wife was of the opposite opinion and she secured the custody of Muskaan through court, purely on religious grounds. The dejected father Masih said that if he would have been a Muslim and her wife a Christian then the courts orders would have been contrariwise. He flayed courts orders saying they are biased and an injustice.
Court sources said that Mumtaz Bibi filed a habeas corpus petition to secure the custody of her minor daughter. The sources on the condition of anonymity said that Bibi wrote in her plea to the court that her minor daughter Muskaan is living with a Christian man who is teaching her Christianity and raising her like a Christian girl. Sources added that in the petition she mentioned that 7 months old baby girl is Muslim and she urged the court to recover her Muslim daughter from the confinement of a Christian man, so that she might raise her like a Muslim girl, concealing the truth from court.
The District and Sessions Court Sargodha issued directives to the Station House Officer (SHO) of Police Station Factory Area to recover the Muslim baby girl and hand over her to her Muslim mother. Acting accordingly SHO recovered and handed over the minor girl Muskaan to Muslim woman and former wife of Christian man Imran Masih.
This is the latest in the series of injustices served to the Christians of Pakistan. There are several precedents from the past that court always orders to hand over the Children to Muslim single parent, over looking the facts and sentiment of Pakistani Christians. The courts orders would have been vice versa, in case Mumtaz Bibi would have been a Christian woman. It shows that Christians are living in a predominantly Muslim country Pakistan, where sympathies of the law enforcement agencies and courts of law are always with Muslims.
