Faisalabad: Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the case of Maria Shahbaz, a 13-year-old Christi
Charnali, Pakistan: April 6, 2009. (Jawad Mazhar reports for PCP) April 5th: A Christian baby-sitter was accused of stealing 6 (six) gold bangles by her mistress here on the outskirts of Sargodha, said parents of the Christian baby-sitter talking to PCP on Feb 21st. Parents turned down accusation saying that some one else might have stolen gold jewelry but they (Muslim mistress and her family) are targeting our little daughter thinking that this little girl and her impoverished Christian family would not be able to stand against them and thus compelling the little girl to work for them free of cost.
Ashraf Masih, a deplorably poor laborer and father of the Christian baby-sitter told PCP my daughter Mehvish Ashraf 12, used to work at the house of a local Muslim school teacher Mrs. Humaira Bibi of Government Girls High School Chak (village) # 79 NB, as a baby-sitter.
Masih said that on Dec 21st, 2008, four days before the last years Christmas my daughter Mehvish Ashraf returned home for Christmas celebrations. He said that Muslim school teacher Humaira Bibi and her husband themselves came to drop her at our home, Ashraf Masih added, at that time they did not say even a single word about the theft of their gold ornaments. Masih added, instead they were very happy and satisfied with the work and responsible nature of Mehvish, at such a small age.
Nasreen Bibi, the mother of the accused Christian baby-sitter said, after Christmas and New Year celebrations, on Jan 4th Muslim school teacher asked my daughter to re-join but we wanted Mehvish to quit her present job and continue her education. Nasreen Bibi went on saying that therefore Mehvish refused her mistress and got admitted in a local private school for her education.
Parents of the innocent little former baby-sitter said we were completely stunned to know when her Muslim mistress leveled charges of stealing six gold bangles worth Pakistani Rs. 160,000/- (US $ 2029/- approx) against her, almost two months after leaving the job of baby-sitter.
Parents said that refusal of Mehvish Ashraf infuriated Muslim school teacher Humaira Bibi and her husband and they have threatened the innocent little girl to return to her job or face the consequences. Parents added that Muslim couple has threatened to submit an application in the Saddr Police Station to register a case of stealing gold bangles under article 379 or 381 of Pakistan Penal Code. (PPC)
When PCP asked little Mehvish Ashraf about this case, the terrified little Christian girl said that she could not even think of such a sinister thing. She also said that her mistress wants her to work at her home and nothing else. She added that at work her Muslim mistress often lambasted me for being Christian and used to call me by names, making fun of my faith and Christ.
To query, Mehvish Ashraf said that her Muslim mistress harbored resentment for her denial to return and this had been simmering up in her heart and now she has accused me of stealing gold jewelry, to quench her revenge.
The parents of Mehvish Ashraf apprised PCP that on Feb 4th Mrs. Humaira Bibi, her husband and two other unknown women came to their house and searched every nook and corner of their house saying that a sorcerer has told them that we have kept the jewelry in a black polythene bag, under a cub, on a shelf.
Parents of the innocent little Christian girl added that the prophecy of the wizard proved to be a lie, after they could not recover the gold bangles from our home.
Ashraf and Nasreen, father and mother of little Christian girl said that this is evident from the words and actions of the Muslim mistress that she wants Mehvish to return at her job and take care of her children when she is on her job at Government Girls High School Chak # 79 NB.
Parents said we can bet and swear that our daughter can not do such an evil act of casting malicious eye on some one else’s things. Concerned parents also said that in case Muslim school teacher goes to Police they would be helpless to defend themselves in the Police Station and Court of Law.
UPDATE: It is notable that two other Muslim housemaids of Bajwa Colony work in the same house. The head of the village # 79 NB Asjad Bajwa has pressurized little Christian girl Mehvish Ashraf not to mention the names of those Muslim housemaids during the proceedings of the public jury. Initially it is not clear why he has done so. But it appears from this act that local village head harbors discrimination for the Christian residents of his village in his mind and some how he wants them to be kept away from this theft case and he even dose not want them to be dubious in this case. So, all the Muslims including mistress of Mehvish Ashraf, local village elder, public jury, police and every other Muslim of the village together have pre-planned to implicate this innocent little Christian girl Mehvish Ashraf girl into this theft case of 6 golden bangles.
The parents of the Christian girl Mehvish Ashraf have appealed to PCP help them in case this regrettable episode goes into Police Station and later into the Court house and save their daughter from the stigma of being a Thief.
Chairman of Christian aid group ROD, Mr. Ferhan Mazher not only denounced this sad occurrence saying that they this little Christian wean can not steal gold jewelry but some one else might have robbed them of gold bangles and now to recover their mislay of jewelry they are targeting Mehvish Ashraf thinking her to be a poor and defenseless Christian girl. Mazher also appealed PCP to help this Christian family. Talking to PCP Mr. Mazher said that this Christian family is very poor and I solemnly entreat to PCP help this Christian family.
